The pace of the UK job market is a very prominent conversation topic in recruitment right now. Competition is fierce and questions such as these are becoming a part of each and every conversation that I have with job-seekers:
Can the content of my CV boost my chances of getting a job?
What can I do to help myself?
What can I do to make my CV stand out?
Here are my 5 top tips on CV content...
1. Include a summary at the top of your CV. It should contain bullet points of your career to date, including what your industry focus is, what sectors you work in, and what your key achievements have been. If you work in a sales environment, highlight some key facts, figures and sales details here to highlight that you're good at what you do.
2. Ensure your layout is simple. This should include easy segments of writing and be smooth to follow. You should also try to avoid too many bold subheadings and just use bold, italics or underline for the main segment differentiations. When you have completed your CV, take a glance over it. If you stumble and have to go back and re-read - no doubt your reader could too.
3. Switch up your choice of wording and aim to use words that have positive, strong connotations, e.g swap "helped" with "collaborated" or "coordinated".
4. Bullet points under previous job responsibilities should focus on key achievements, facts and figures - this is your time to show a reader why they would choose to add you to their team. What value do you add? Where did you go above and beyond? What have you achieved? Keep it short and sweet and focus on the specific action and outcome, instead of surrounding context.
5. Remember that your CV is a marketing tool - you need to utilise it to get yourself noticed - like a flamingo in a sea of pigeons! Wow your reader with your talent, your skills, your achievements and show them why you would be a great fit for their team.
